Broxbourne has highly successful Masters rowing squad. Some of our rowers are the best, including World and National Champions and Henley winners. In 2013 Broxbourne was the most successful club at the National Masters Championship and won the “Victor Ludorum”.

In addition to elite rowers, we also welcome those returning to the sport and novices. If you want to train and race, you will be most welcome in the Broxbourne Masters squad.

Scullers Head

Adam Sculling under Chiswick Bridge, Scullers Head 2010After Fours Head, attention in the Senior and Vet Men’s squad turned to Scullers Head.  We arrived at Thames Tradesman’s a couple of hours before the race in darkness with temperatures hovering around freezing.  However, the tide had already started to go out, so with very little wind and low water, conditions were calm and perfect for sculling.

This year we had eight entries, with Adam starting eighth and looking to defend his IM2 pennant from last year, and first time entries for Tom, Robin from the senior squad and Russell from the Vets.

The race went without incident for most of the Broxbourne scullers with the exception of Quintin, who having started one place behind Russell and having over taken him, got tangled up with the next person he overtook resulting in Russell passing him back.  Needless to say, having untangled himself, Qunitin unleashed the rage and chased Russell down again, finishing the race a few lengths clear of him.

Thanks must go to Rob who towed down, then cycled from Putney back to Barnes after the race to get the trailer, allowing the rest of us to sit in Vesta drinking tea and eating cake in the warm instead of taking on the miserable scull back up to Thames Tradesman’s!

When the results came out in the evening, there was plenty to celebrate.  Adam had retained the IM2 pennant, finishing 11th, with Craig finishing 29th and me finishing 34th (all three of us move down two places if you add the time only entries into the results).  Both Rob and Tom finished in the top two hundred with Rob 122nd, and Tom 174th.  This should give them both good starting positions next year.  Robin managed to beat his Dad.  Full results can be found on the Scullers Head results page.

Saturday at Peterborough

Winning WIM3.4+The weather this Saturday made Peterborough Summer an interesting event this year! During the first rounds of races that morning, in proper down-pours, both WIM3.2x crews (Sarah/Lizzie and Angela/Louise) unfortunately got knocked out in their heats. However, the WIM3.4+ of Katie, Charlotte W and two of our vacation students Charlotte L and Sarah M-P, stormed through their heat!

The day progressed with mixed success. The WIM3.4x- (Sarah G, Lizzy, Anne-Marie and Amanda) put up a good fight but were pipped to the post by Staines and Oxford City in their heat. The IM1.2x of Tom Jenkins and Robin Mould made it to the repechage. Tom suffered some back problems during their second race though, after he was hit by an 8 during training last week, so they didn’t make it through to the final. However, a good effort from the both given Tom’s injury and the fact they originally wanted to race IM2.

Steve, Graham, Matt and Dominic were racing IM3.4+ but didn’t make it to the final. They were back racing on Sunday also (although I don’t know the outcomes for Sunday!). The WNov.8+ all had a good close racing against City of Cambridge losing by no more than a length – well done to Belinda, Sue, Helen, Emma, Chloe, Penny, Jane, Liz and cox Ollie. Well done also to Helen who braved the single in the Women’s Novice category. She made it to the rep but after close encounters with waves, buoys and swans, she didn’t quite make it to the final!

Congratulations of the day go to Hugo and Andy who won in their MasD pair. The WIM3.4+ also repeated their success from the heat in both the semi and the final. So, congratulations also go to that crew, especially to Charlotte W who lost her novices!
